The Problem with Note Apps

Most note apps store your data on their servers. You trust them with your thoughts, passwords, and ideas.

Cloud apps read your data

Your notes sit on someone else's server

Passwords stored remotely

One breach exposes everything

Vendor lock-in

Switching apps means losing data

VaultNote encrypts first

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We have answers.

Is VaultNote free?
Yes, VaultNote is completely free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. No subscriptions, no hidden fees.
Where is my data stored?
Your notes are stored locally on your device and optionally synced to YOUR private GitHub repository. We don't have any servers — your data never touches our infrastructure.
Can I use it without GitHub?
Yes! GitHub sync is optional. You can use VaultNote as a fully offline, local-only note app.
How do I decrypt password-protected gists?
Use our web decrypt tool! Visit the 'Decrypt Gist' page, paste the gist URL, enter the password, and view the decrypted content directly in your browser.
Is my data really encrypted?
Yes. Notes are encrypted with AES-256-CBC before leaving your device. Only encrypted data is uploaded to GitHub. Without your master password, the data is unreadable.
What happens if I forget my password?
Your password is never stored anywhere — not even locally. If you forget it, encrypted notes cannot be recovered. We recommend using a password manager.
Can I sync across multiple devices?
Yes! Connect the same GitHub repo on all your devices. Just use the same master password to decrypt your notes everywhere.
